The Ascent Has Only Begun: Why I Built the American Family Renaissance

by Mike Van Pelt | Sep 14, 2026 | Leadership, Faith, Fatherhood, General, Mindset

There is a moment that happens in almost every conversation I have with a man who is struggling.

He talks for a while. He gives me the surface report. Work is fine. Family is fine. Church is fine. Then something shifts in his voice, and he tells me the truth: he is carrying something alone, he has been carrying it alone for a long time, and he does not know who he would even call.

That moment is the reason the American Family Renaissance exists.

Because here is what I have learned after years of coaching, mentoring, speaking, and sitting across the table from men who look like they have it handled, most men are not failing because they lack talent, effort, or ambition. They are failing because they are isolated. They are running a life they were never designed to run by themselves, and they have convinced themselves that asking for help is the same thing as admitting defeat.

It is not. It is the beginning of everything.

IT’S HERE. AND THERE IS STILL TIME.

The inaugural American Family Renaissance Summit — The Power of Asking for Help — is live and available right now.

Eight speakers. One mission. One room built specifically for men who are done pretending.

Scott Schilling. Chris Widener. Tom Ziglar. Jim Britt. Vince Miller. Bob Tiede. Bob Beaudine. And my own keynote, the talk that gave this entire summit its name.

These are not filler names. These are men who have spent decades building other men, in business, in ministry, in leadership, in families. They came because they believe what I believe: that a generation of men is quietly drowning within arm’s reach of rescue, and somebody needs to say so out loud.

If you have not registered yet, you have not missed it. Get in.

WHY I BUILT THIS

I wanted to do this summit for one reason: I want to see men succeed.

Not in one lane. In all of them. Personally. In business. Spiritually. Because the man who is crushing it at work while his marriage quietly dies is not succeeding, he is trading. And the man who is spiritually solid but financially reckless is not succeeding either, he is postponing. Real success is integrated. It holds together under pressure. It looks the same at the office, at the dinner table, and at 2 a.m. when nobody is watching.

Building that kind of life in this world is a challenge, to say the least. The culture is loud. The distractions are engineered. The demands on a man’s attention are relentless, and most of them are designed by someone who does not care what happens to his family.

So people ask me all the time; and I mean all the time,  what actually makes the difference? What separates the man who is genuinely thriving from the man who is barely getting by?

I have heard every answer you can imagine. Discipline. Systems. Morning routines. Mindset. Better habits. Harder work.

Those things matter. I teach many of them. But they are not the answer.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUCCESS AND BARELY GETTING BY

In my worldview, the difference is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Not church attendance. Not religious vocabulary. Not a cross on the wall and a Bible on the shelf you have not opened since Easter. A relationship, the kind where you actually talk to Him, actually listen, and actually let Him reorder what you want.

Because everything else a man builds his identity on will eventually move. Performance moves. Income moves. Physical strength moves. Titles move. Other people’s approval moves constantly, and if you have built your worth on it, you will spend your whole life chasing a moving target and calling the exhaustion “ambition.”

Identity in Christ does not move.

When a man gets that settled, something changes in how he carries weight. He stops performing and starts leading. He stops defending and starts listening. He stops white-knuckling his way through his own life and starts asking for help, from God first, and then from the men around him.

That is the whole premise of this summit. That is the conviction that produced the American Family Renaissance.

I DIDN’T GO LOOKING FOR A BUSINESS

Here is the part I most want you to hear, because I think it matters more than anything else I could tell you about this platform.

I did not sit around asking, “What business could I start?” I did not go looking for eight hundred more things to put on my calendar. I was not brainstorming a brand, reverse-engineering a market, or hunting for a niche to fill.

The Holy Spirit is breathing life into this in ways I would not have conceived on my own.

I want to be careful here, because that sentence gets thrown around casually and I do not mean it casually. I mean that doors have opened I did not knock on. I mean that people have shown up I did not recruit. I mean that ideas have landed fully formed at moments when I had nothing left to give. I mean that the lineup of speakers on this summit is not the result of my persuasion, it is the result of men saying yes to something they recognized as bigger than the invitation.

And the best part? I feel no pressure to develop something, sell something, or think something up that is not on the Holy Spirit’s agenda.

There is a freedom in that I did not expect.

Most men who build something live under constant internal pressure, invent faster, launch sooner, stay ahead, stay relevant, never stop. It is an anxious way to work and it produces anxious work. When you are following instead of inventing, the pressure lifts. You are no longer responsible for the outcome. You are only responsible for obedience and excellence.

That is where I am. And it is precisely why I am convinced the ascent of AFR has only begun.

WHAT THE AMERICAN FAMILY RENAISSANCE ACTUALLY IS

This journey is about the mission, because I would rather you understand it than admire it.

Build the Man. Strengthen the Family. Restore the Nation.

That is the order. It is not negotiable and it is not decorative. You cannot restore a nation by arguing about a nation. You restore it the way it was built — one man at a time, one household at a time, one generation raised differently than the last one.

The whole architecture runs on God, Family, and Country, and it moves through three pillars:

American Family Renaissance — the national movement. The cultural mission of restoring the foundations of God, Family, and Country by raising up men who become stronger spiritual leaders, husbands, fathers, and examples in their communities.

The Restored Man Initiative — the men’s leadership umbrella. Where the calling becomes structured formation: the standards, the marks, the discipleship.

True Man Life Coaching — the coaching and the foundational engine underneath all of it. This is where transformation becomes personal. Coaching. Speaking. Podcasting. Courses. Mentorship. The work of helping men break isolation, confront limiting beliefs, rebuild identity, develop discipline, strengthen faith, and live with clarity and conviction.

One mission, two expressions. True Man Life Coaching builds the man. American Family Renaissance restores the family and carries the mission into homes, communities, and culture.

And understand what separates this from generic self-development, because the distinction is the entire point. I am not teaching motivation. I am not teaching productivity hacks. I am not selling inspiration.

I am calling men into reconstruction — spiritually, emotionally, mentally, physically, and relationally. I am trying to rebuild the masculine heart in a culture that has left far too many men isolated, passive, distracted, and directionless.

I am not selling inspiration. I am building men.

And underneath nearly everything I teach sits one central truth: real strength begins when a man becomes honest enough to ask for help, surrender his pride, and step fully into the life God is calling him to lead.

WHERE WE GO FROM HERE

The summit is not the finish line. It is the front door. Here is what is being built behind it.

THE TRUE MAN INNER CIRCLE — WEEKLY

The Inner Circle newsletter lands weekly, and it is not a promotional bulletin. It is a working table.

Scripture that actually applies to what you are facing. A practical challenge you can execute before the week ends. Honest commentary on what is happening to men, marriages, and families right now — without the panic and without the pretending. Early word on everything AFR is opening before it goes public.

If you want one consistent input every week that pulls you back toward God, back toward your family, and back toward the man you said you were going to be, this is it. It takes you a few minutes to read and it will cost you something to obey. That is by design.

AN INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DIRECTORY AND EVENTS CALENDAR

This one matters to me deeply, and it comes straight out of the problem I described at the top of this post.

Right now there is a man in your zip code leading a solid men’s group, and you have never heard of him. There is a retreat happening three hours from your house that would change the trajectory of your year, and you will never know it existed. There is a brotherhood forming in your city while you sit in your truck in the driveway wondering why you feel so alone.

The isolation is not always a lack of resources. Very often it is a lack of connective tissue.

So we are building it. A searchable international directory of men’s ministries, brotherhoods, coaches, groups, and leaders — alongside a live events calendar of retreats, summits, conferences, and gatherings across the country and beyond. One place to find your people and find the room you are supposed to be in.

No man alone stops being a slogan the moment a man can actually find the table.

COURSES, TRAININGS, AND WORKSHOPS

Conviction without structure evaporates. Every man reading this has felt something stir at a retreat or a conference and watched it dissolve by the following Thursday. The fix is not more emotion. It is formation.

That is what The Standard of a Restored Man — The 9 Marks of a Restored Man is for. Twelve weeks. Sixteen men. Personally guided by me, with no hiding, no spectating, and no coasting. It is the most demanding thing I offer and the most effective.

Beyond it, we are expanding the full slate: courses, trainings, and workshops built for men, organized around God, Family, and Country, and designed to be worked rather than watched. Live sessions. Cohorts. Materials you can run with your own group. Formation that survives contact with a Tuesday.

MEN’S HEALTH — AND THE HABITS UNDERNEATH THE HABITS

Here is where we are placing significant new focus, and I want to explain why it belongs in a faith-based men’s platform.

Your body is not separate from your calling. A man who is exhausted, inflamed, dehydrated, and running on whatever was closest to the register is not going to lead his family well. He does not have the patience for his kids. He does not have the presence for his wife. He does not have the clarity for his work or the stamina for his prayer life. He is not spiritually weak. He is depleted, and he has mislabeled it.

Scripture calls the body a temple, and most of us have been treating it like a rental.

So we are moving into men’s health awareness with real intent, and we are partnering with a food and hydration company that is about to change how you think about the habits you have formed around eating and drinking. Not a diet. Not a transformation challenge with a countdown clock. A genuine reexamination of what you are putting in your body, why you reach for it, and what it is costing the people who depend on you.

More on this soon. I am excited about it, and I think it is going to land harder than anyone expects, because most men have never connected their afternoon crash to their evening temper.

THE ASCENT HAS ONLY BEGUN

I want to say this as clearly as I know how.

Everything I just described — the summit, the Inner Circle, the directory, the courses, the health focus — none of it came from a whiteboard session. It came from listening. And the fact that it is arriving this fast, in this sequence, with these people, tells me we are early in something rather than late in it.

This is an exciting time. I want you on board, not as a spectator collecting content, but as a man who joins, does the work, and brings somebody with him.

Because that is the other half of this. You were not built to receive this alone any more than you were built to carry your life alone. Somewhere in your phone right now is a man who needs exactly what is on this page and would never go looking for it himself.

Send it to him. That is how a renaissance actually spreads, not through a marketing budget, but through one man telling another man the truth.
