WHITE-KNUCKLING VS. WALKING WITH GOD: A MAN’S COMEBACK STORY A Conversation from The Next Fix Podcast with Ryan Penley

by Mike Van Pelt | Jan 10, 2026 | Podcast

There is a version of manhood that looks like effort.

Grinding harder. Doing the right things. Following the rules, checking the boxes, and white-knuckling through whatever life throws at you because that is what a real man does, he handles it.

I lived that version for a long time. And I can tell you firsthand: it does not work.

I recently joined Ryan Penley on The Next Fix podcast to share a real comeback story, one that a lot of men are quietly living right now without anyone knowing the weight they are carrying. We talked about what happens when willpower runs out and what was waiting for me on the other side.

WHEN DISCIPLINE WASN’T ENOUGH

There was a season in my life as a stay-at-home dad where I lost my sense of purpose entirely. I was doing everything that was supposed to add up to a meaningful life — showing up, working hard, trying to do the right things. And yet something essential was missing.

I kept trying to fix it the way men are conditioned to fix everything: with more effort. More discipline. More gritted-teeth determination. White-knuckling my way through a purpose crisis as if enough willpower could manufacture meaning.

I couldn’t. And I had to come to the end of myself before I understood why.

The shift did not come through trying harder. It came through intimacy with God, brotherhood with other men, and the humility to finally ask for help.

WHAT WE COVERED

Ryan and I went deep into the realities most men experience but rarely talk about out loud.

We talked about why willpower alone keeps men stuck — because willpower addresses behavior, not the wound underneath it. You can discipline yourself into exhaustion and still be running from the same unresolved pain.

We talked about how buried childhood wounds resurface later in life — often in a man’s thirties, forties, or fifties, disguised as anxiety, anger, restlessness, or a vague sense that something is wrong even when life looks fine on paper.

We talked about the role of faith in reclaiming identity — how a man who does not know who he is in Christ will keep building his identity on foundations that cannot hold. Performance, provision, and reputation will always eventually fail him. God does not.

We talked about male community and mentorship—why brotherhood is not optional for a man who wants to grow, and why so many men go decades without a single relationship deep enough to tell the truth in.

And we talked about family dynamics and the weight of leadership—what it costs a man to lead his household and why that weight was never meant to be carried in isolation.

THE TRUE MAN PHILOSOPHY

At the center of this conversation is something I believe with everything in me: modern masculinity has been sold a bill of goods. Strength without surrender. Leadership without humility. Discipline without dependence on God.

The real path forward—the True Man path—is different. It is breaking cycles instead of repeating them. It is building a legacy instead of just getting through the week. It is the daily decision to stop surviving and start becoming who God actually designed you to be.

That shift does not happen through more grinding. It happens through walking with God instead of white-knuckling life alone.

IS THIS YOU?

If you’ve been grinding but not growing…

If you feel called to lead but don’t know where to start…

If you’re ready to stop surviving and start becoming…

This conversation will meet you exactly where you are.
