WHAT RIP WHEELER CAN TEACH EVERY MAN ABOUT BEING SEEN True Man Podcast — Episode #247

by Mike Van Pelt | Jul 9, 2026 | Podcast

There are television characters we enjoy, and then there are characters that strike something much deeper.

Rip Wheeler from Yellowstone is one of those men.

On the surface, he appears to be everything our culture admires in masculinity. Strong. Dependable. Courageous. Loyal. Willing to do the hard jobs no one else wants to do. He doesn’t complain. He doesn’t seek attention. He simply shows up and gets the work done.

But I don’t think that’s why millions of men connect with him.

Men see themselves in Rip Wheeler not because of the toughness but because beneath the toughness is a longing that almost every man understands. A desire to be seen. Known. Valued for who he is, not just for what he accomplishes.

That’s where the story becomes bigger than a television show.

THE FORTRESS MOST MEN BUILD

Most men were never taught how to process pain.

They were taught to push through it. To stay busy. To work harder. To solve problems. To carry the weight and keep moving without looking back.

Over time, many men become incredibly capable while simultaneously becoming emotionally isolated. They learn to wear strength like armor, until eventually no one can see the man underneath it. Including the man himself.

The world applauds productivity.

God desires authenticity.

Those are two very different pursuits. And the gap between them is where a lot of men are quietly falling apart.

Rip Wheeler reminds us that strength alone is never enough. Real strength always serves something greater than itself. A man who can move mountains but cannot let anyone close has not built a life , he has built a fortress. And fortresses, by design, keep everything out.

THE WOMAN WHO WANTED TO BE CHOSEN

Beth Dutton’s story runs parallel to Rip’s in a way that is impossible to ignore.

Behind the confidence, the intelligence, and the fierce determination is a wounded daughter who desperately wanted her father’s affirmation. Her story is a reminder that success never heals rejection. Achievement never replaces acceptance. A person can climb every ladder available to them and still feel the ache of not being chosen by the people who matter most.

Whether we are talking about a son seeking his father’s approval or a daughter longing to be seen, the need underneath is the same.

Every human heart asks the same questions:

Do you see me? Do I matter? Am I enough?

Those are not signs of weakness. They are the signature of being human. And the man who has buried those questions rather than facing them is not stronger for it. He is simply carrying more weight in a less visible place.

BROTHERHOOD MATTERS MORE THAN MOST MEN ADMIT

One of the most overlooked scenes in Yellowstone happens when Rip asks Lloyd to stand beside him as his best man (Scene from Yellowstone – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97rwsTSSGzM).

It isn’t flashy. There is no long emotional speech. No grand gesture. It is simply one man honoring another who earned his trust through years of showing up—through shared burdens, hard seasons, and proven character.

That is what biblical brotherhood actually looks like.

It is not built on convenience. It is not built on social media connections or surface-level conversations about sports and work. It is built through consistent presence, honest conversation, and the willingness to stand beside someone when life gets hard.

Many men today have hundreds of online connections and almost no one who knows their real story.

Every man needs a Lloyd.

Someone who has been in the trenches with him. Someone who can tell him the truth when he needs to hear it. Someone who will stand beside him, not because it is easy, but because the relationship has been built on something real.

If you cannot name that person in your life right now, that is not just a social observation. That is a call to action.

LISTENING IS LEADERSHIP

One of the most powerful mentoring moments in the entire series comes when Carter asks Rip how to understand women.

Rip doesn’t offer a clever line or complicated strategy.

He tells him to listen.

Simple. Unglamorous. And incredibly rare.

Most of us listen long enough to prepare our response. Very few of us listen to truly understand. There is a significant difference between the two, and the people in our lives feel that difference every single day.

James 1:19—” Be quick to listen, slow to speak”—is not a suggestion for passive men. It is a command for mature ones.

The strongest leaders in a marriage, a family, or a business are almost always the best listeners in the room. Not the loudest voices. Not the quickest with an answer. The ones who make the people around them feel genuinely heard.

That kind of presence is one of the greatest gifts a man can offer.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO EARN WHAT GOD ALREADY OFFERS

Perhaps the most significant difference between Rip Wheeler’s story and ours is this:

Rip spends much of his life trying to prove himself worthy. Trying to earn his place. Trying to be enough through performance, loyalty, and sacrifice.

The Gospel tells a different story entirely.

Before you accomplish anything. Before you succeed. Before you produce a single result worth noting—God already knows you completely. Psalm 139 tells us we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Our identity is not rooted in performance. It is rooted in our Creator.

That changes everything.

When a man truly understands that he is already seen by his Heavenly Father — fully known and fully loved without having earned it — he no longer has to spend his life chasing approval from everyone else. He can lead from security rather than striving. He can love without keeping score. He can be honest about his needs without treating that honesty as a threat to his identity.

That is the freedom the Gospel offers. Not the absence of struggle, but the end of performing for acceptance.

THREE CHALLENGES FOR THIS WEEK

As you reflect on Rip Wheeler’s story, sit with these three questions.

First, who is your Lloyd? Who has consistently shown up in your life and deserves to hear your gratitude? Reach out. Don’t wait for a better moment. The moment is now.

Second, are you truly listening? The next time your wife, your children, or a trusted friend speaks to you, resist the urge to formulate your response while they are still talking. Simply listen. Be present. Presence is one of the greatest gifts you will ever offer another person.

Third—what wall are you still hiding behind? Strength is not pretending you don’t need anyone. Strength is having the courage to let trustworthy people see who you really are. The armor has kept you safe. It has also kept you isolated. There is a difference between protection and isolation, and it matters.

KNOW GOD. KNOW YOURSELF. LIVE FULLY.

At True Man, we talk consistently about three pillars of authentic masculinity: Know God. Know Yourself. Live Fully.

When those three pillars are in place, a man no longer has to perform for acceptance. He can lead with confidence, love with conviction, and build a legacy that extends far beyond his accomplishments.

Maybe that is why Rip Wheeler resonates with so many men.

Not because he is fearless. Not because he is perfect. But beneath all the toughness is a man who longs to be known.

The good news is this: through Christ, you already are.
