What happens when a man has done everything he was told to do — built the career, provided for the family, checked every box — and still feels like something is missing?
That’s the question I sat down to answer recently on Unmute with Priya: Finding Your Voice at Midlife, hosted by Priya Sudarsanam. The episode is called “The Identity Crisis So Many Men Never Talk About,” and it’s exactly what it sounds like, a real conversation about the identity crisis so many men quietly carry and rarely say out loud.
I want to tell you a little about why this conversation mattered to me and then point you to where you can watch or listen to the whole thing.
WHY THIS CONVERSATION NEEDED TO HAPPEN
Priya’s podcast is built around helping people find their voice at midlife, and while her audience isn’t exclusively men, she wanted to bring a male perspective into that conversation because the truth is, men hit this same identity wall. We just tend to suffer through it in silence.
We talked about the pressure men feel to always be strong, to always have it together, to be the provider who never shows a crack. We talked about the loneliness that builds underneath that pressure — the isolation of carrying everything alone because somewhere along the way, we were taught that needing help was a weakness instead of what it actually is: one of the most courageous things a man can do.
I shared some of my own story in this one, the self-doubt, the seasons where I genuinely lost my sense of who I was, and what it took to finally understand that purpose was never going to be found in a job title or a list of accomplishments. It’s found in knowing who you are at your core.
WHAT WE COVERED
Here’s a look at the ground we walked through together:
- Why so many men struggle with identity in midlife
- The pressure to be the provider and “have it all together”
- How isolation quietly impacts mental and emotional health
- Why asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness
- The connection between purpose, faith, and fulfillment
- The importance of relationships in an increasingly disconnected world
- Leading your family with presence, not perfection
- Finding your worth beyond your career or accomplishments
While this conversation centers on men, I think Priya’s right that the deeper questions here—who am I beyond the roles I play, what am I actually worth, and where do I go for help—are questions almost anyone reaches at some point. If you’ve ever wondered who you are underneath your job title, this one’s for you too.

A big thank you to Priya Sudarsanam for creating a space where this conversation could happen honestly and for inviting the True Man message into her community. If you’re a man reading this and any part of what’s above sounds familiar — the pressure, the isolation, the sense that something’s missing even though you’ve done everything “right” — I’d encourage you to start there. Your identity was never meant to be built on your job title. It’s meant to be built on who God created you to be.
