GRIEF, IDENTITY, AND THE STRENGTH TO ASK FOR HELP A Conversation from the Father’s Refuge Podcast with James Moffitt

There are seasons in a man’s life that strip everything away.

The title. The role. The routine. The identity he built around the people and circumstances that defined him. And when those things go—through loss, grief, or a life that no longer looks like the one he planned—a man is left with a question he may not have been prepared to answer:

Who am I now?

I recently had the privilege of sitting down with James Moffitt on the Father’s Refuge podcast for one of the most personal and honest conversations I’ve been part of. We talked about grief, vulnerability, authentic manhood, and what it actually looks like for a man to navigate loss without losing himself in the process.

This was not a surface-level conversation. James created space for the real stuff, the kind of dialogue that most men never get to have because the world around them does not make room for it.

WHAT WE COVERED

We went deep on several things that matter deeply to the men I work with every day.

We talked about vulnerability—not as weakness, but as one of the most courageous acts a man can commit to. The cultural message tells men to stay silent, stay strong, and handle it alone. That message is not strength. It is isolation dressed up as discipline. Real strength is found in the willingness to name what you are carrying and let someone else stand with you in it.

We talked about grief and loss—and how men tend to bury it rather than process it. Grief does not disappear when it is ignored. It migrates. It shows up in anger, disconnection, passivity, and the slow erosion of a man’s presence in the lives of the people who need him most.

We talked about self-discovery—the journey every man must take if he is going to lead from something real rather than something performed. Knowing who you are in Christ, understanding how your past has shaped you, and being honest about where you are today—that is not soft work. That is the hardest and most necessary work a man can do.

And we talked about community—because no man was built to carry this alone. The men who are thriving are not the ones who figured it out in isolation. They are the ones who found brotherhood, sought accountability, and were willing to ask for help without treating that ask as a surrender.

THE MESSAGE UNDERNEATH IT ALL

Silence is not strength.

That is the thread running through everything James and I discussed. The man who suffers quietly, performs publicly, and never lets anyone close enough to see the real weight he is carrying—that man is not protecting himself. He is slowly disappearing.

The willingness to share your struggles, seek support, and let other men into the real parts of your life is not a setback. It is the beginning of becoming who God designed you to be.
